The story
Newlyweds Eleonora, an osteopath, and Valerio, a real estate agent, arrive at a luxurious Roman hotel after their wedding, hoping to enjoy their first night together in its celebrated Love Suite. Their teasing soon turns to recriminations over the attention they gave their respective former partners. Then Eleonora finds an envelope in Valerio’s jacket containing a check and ring from Ester, his longtime ex-girlfriend, who has not accepted the end of their relationship. Doubt and jealousy take hold, and Eleonora pulls Valerio into the streets of Rome to find Ester and seek answers and reassurance that he seems reluctant to give.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Eleonora and Valerio are newlyweds: she is an osteopath, and he is a real estate agent. After the ceremony and wedding reception, they walk through the corridors of a luxurious hotel in Rome, looking for the famous “Love Suite,” which, as the hotel attendant insists rather too emphatically, has hosted stars and prominent figures from all over the world. It has been a long day, and amid jabs and teasing remarks, the newlyweds reproach each other over the glances and conversations they shared with their respective exes. At last they reach the suite, with its breathtaking view of Rome and a bottle of sparkling wine kindly provided by his parents, and are ready to enjoy their wedding night. But things suddenly become complicated when Eleonora finds an envelope in Valerio’s jacket containing a check and a ring left by Ester, his longtime ex-girlfriend, who has not yet come to terms with the end of their relationship. This is enough to throw the bride into crisis, rekindling doubts and jealousy and, above all, an immediate need to learn the truth about this mysterious gift. Putting on a pair of red sneakers, a wedding gift from her ex, Eleonora drags Valerio through the streets of Rome in search of Ester and, more generally, of answers and reassurance that her husband seems unwilling to give her. Misunderstandings and confusion come to a head at the recording studio of Michele, Eleonora’s ex-boyfriend, where the newlyweds are persuaded to watch a short film he made. There, Eleonora’s nostalgic behavior makes Valerio doubt her, prompting him to leave. Once alone with Eleonora, her ex-boyfriend makes a move on her, but she rejects him, then walks away and continues on foot through the city streets. Meanwhile, as Valerio strolls through Rome, he happens to meet his parents, who are still “in love” with his ex and distrustful of their new daughter-in-law because she is not Jewish. He tells them a lie instead of the real reason he is not at the hotel with Eleonora. Later, Valerio also runs into his ex-girlfriend, who has decided to use that very night to collect her things, which are still stored in his apartment. The two young newlyweds then continue their wanderings through nighttime Rome separately. Eleonora’s journey becomes more “dreamlike” and brings her face to face with her latent passion for a career as a fashion designer, while Valerio’s is marked by an encounter that seems fated: he meets a writer of mystery novels, a passion and secret dream of his. An unexpected chemistry develops between the two near-strangers, leading them back to the hotel’s Love Suite, where the woman brings Valerio to the brink of cheating. Shortly afterward, Eleonora also returns to the hotel, escorted by the carabinieri, who caught her “wandering” around the city without identification. In the hotel reception area, the newlyweds clash. After their argument, Eleonora runs toward the Love Suite, with Valerio chasing after her. Although the argument’s aftermath continues to linger, in the end their fear of losing each other outweighs their fears of the past, misunderstandings, and confusion. The newlyweds reconcile, deciding to leave the past behind and begin their real life together, with the possibility of a “forever” still ahead of them.
