In a juvenile detention center where boys and girls are kept apart, two young detainees begin a romance through glances and secret letters.
The story
Daphne is a young detainee in a juvenile detention center, serving time after committing a robbery with a girl her own age. The institution keeps boys and girls apart, but Daphne falls in love with Josh, and they begin a relationship through fleeting glances and secret letters passed between their cells. Their connection unfolds amid strict prison rules and Daphne’s difficulty imagining a better future. Her outlook is also shaped by her father’s precarious position as a former inmate on probation and his new relationship with a Romanian woman whose conservative views clash with Daphne’s. A leave from the institution for the woman’s young son’s First Communion offers Daphne a rare opportunity outside.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In a juvenile detention center where boys and girls are not allowed to meet, Daphne, a young detainee who committed a robbery with a girl her own age, falls in love with Josh. A relationship begins between them, made up of fleeting glances and secret letters passed from one cell to another. Yet an underlying distress emerges, which, along with the strict observance of prison rules, prevents Daphne from truly imagining and planning a better future. Indeed, the girl sees her future as somehow obstructed—though her reactions to this vary—by her father’s precarious situation as a former inmate on probation, and by his new relationship with a Romanian woman. She is deeply religious and holds conservative views that strongly clash with Daphne’s; she also has a young son from a previous relationship, with whom Daphne never really interacts. The boy’s First Communion celebration is the long-awaited opportunity for a leave from the institution, and for Daphne it is also a chance to reconcile herself with a fate that seemed already written.
