The story

In her mid-twenties, Pia returns to her parents’ home and childhood bedroom after being discharged from a psychiatric hospital. She takes a temporary job in her father’s office, but the people around her—including her parents, coworkers, and ex-boyfriend—do not believe she is close to normal. Her mother worries her illness may return, while her father tries to fit her into the world on his own terms. Her ex-boyfriend longs for the person she used to be. Pia finds a kindred spirit in Lenni, the 12-year-old boy next door, who also feels trapped by school and a tightly scheduled life. As those around her impose their ideas of how she should be, Pia searches for her place.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In her mid-twenties, Pia has just been discharged from a psychiatric hospital and returns to her childhood bedroom in her parents’ house. She takes a temporary job in her father’s office. But no one believes that Pia is even close to normal after her discharge—not her ex-boyfriend Jona, nor her parents, Elfie and Klaus, nor her coworkers. Only Lenni, the 12-year-old boy next door, feels just as trapped by school and a tightly scheduled free time as Pia does. Her mother, Elfie, worries that Pia’s illness might return. Her father, Klaus, tries to integrate Pia into the world according to his own ideas. And her ex-boyfriend Joni wants the old Pia back. While everyone means well and has their own ideas and expectations about how Pia should be, Pia tries to find her place in the world.
