The accident gives Henry a chance to move up in the soap, changing his prospects on the production and opening a new chapter in his career.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Phyllis, an idle layabout in her forties, lives with her mother, with whom she has a love-hate relationship. She meets Henry, an actor eking out an existence in a supporting role on a medical soap opera. She tells her mother that he is a gynecologist. When she goes to visit Henry, she accidentally runs over the show’s leading man after a spontaneous make-out session, allowing Henry to move up in the soap and start an affair with its leading lady, Doris. When Phyllis and her mother see Henry and Doris kissing, the two follow Doris, and an incident occurs in which Henry runs her over. Henry leaves the soap and becomes an unsuccessful street musician; Phyllis covers up the death. Seeking revenge on Phyllis—who, in the meantime, has also landed the owner of the car involved in the accident on death row in Malaysia by planting drugs on him—Henry tampers with the brakes of the Volvo that Phyllis and her mother share. While doing so, he gets into an argument with a curious passerby, who then knocks him down with a punch. Since Henry has not moved away from the car after the incident, Phyllis’s mother, who intends to drive it to the police, picks him up and takes him along. The mother does not survive the ensuing accident, and Henry remains in a vegetative state from then on. Phyllis inherits and is happy. The police, investigating the death of the former leading man, conclude that Phyllis’s mother caused it.
