The story
Marcello, once a busker in Paris, shares his life with his chinchilla, Pompon. After a passerby helps him during an altercation and gives him an old Solex, Marcello leaves his roommate and friends behind and sets off across France on country roads toward Marseille, accompanied by the little animal. Cheerful, open and friendly, he meets a succession of people along the way, including a gas station attendant, a fisherman, a butcher, a repairman, a police officer, a painter and an actress at the Avignon Off Festival. Full plot (contains spoilers)
Marcello is in the hospital, lying in a coma. His guardian angel asks the angel who has come to take him to the afterlife to grant him an “extension”: he recounts Marcello’s recent weeks in an effort to persuade him. Thanks to this, he leaves his roommate and friends and decides to cross France with the little animal, taking country roads to Marseille. A cheerful, open and friendly character, he has many wonderful encounters along the way (the gas station attendant, the fisherman, the butcher, the repairman in a van, the police officer, the painter, the actress at the Avignon Off Festival, the pétanque players, and so on). In the end, it will be the nurse’s hand that decides Marcello’s fate...
