When a grieving mother is found wandering in confusion, village helper Katja Baumann steps in to support her daughter as the family struggles after her father’s accident.

The story

Village helper Katja Baumann finds Erika Brugger wandering in confusion on a country road instead of attending her husband’s funeral and takes her to hospital, where a doctor diagnoses post-traumatic stress disorder following shock. Erika’s nineteen-year-old daughter, Johanna, struggles to understand her mother’s memory loss and blames Jürgen Fichte, her father’s best friend, for the accident. Asked to help Johanna, Katja sees how overwhelmed she is, promises support, and helps care for Erika and the household. Away from the Brugger family, Katja is also navigating friction with her housemate Jan, who is occupied with renovating an inn, and supporting her friend Leslie after her husband leaves her.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Village helper Katja Baumann encounters Erika Brugger on a country road. Instead of attending her husband’s funeral, Erika is wandering around in a confused state. Katja promptly takes her to the hospital. The doctor diagnoses post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of shock. Bruggers’ nineteen-year-old daughter, Johanna, finds it hard to understand that her mother cannot remember what happened. She is also extremely angry with Jürgen Fichte, her father’s best friend, and blames him for her father’s accident. In desperation, Fichte asks Katja for help so that she can have a quiet talk with Johanna. Katja quickly realizes that Johanna is completely overwhelmed by the situation and promises to support her. Katja takes care of Johanna’s mother and also helps out around the house. During one of her walks with Erika Brugger, she happens to learn from a neighbor that it had “started” the same way with the neighbor’s mother. This gives Katja pause, and she speaks with the doctor, who thinks a genetic predisposition is possible. Johanna could therefore also be affected, though a medical examination could determine that. Katja is reluctant to deliver this news to Johanna, especially since Johanna has just reconciled with Jürgen Fichte. But a conversation cannot be avoided forever, as the illness can be treated more effectively if detected early. Johanna, however, does not want to be tested, because she does not want to spend the rest of her life thinking that she might soon become ill. She also wants to care for her mother for as long as she can and enjoy their time together. In her personal life, Katja is having some trouble with her housemate, Jan Steinmann. He is busy renovating his small inn, which he wants to call “Carpe diem,” and has little time for Katja’s well-meant advice. She is also looking after her friend Leslie Wolff. Katja wants to offer her emotional support, since Leslie has been left by her husband. It turns out that Leslie could work as a cook for Jan. She has barely heard this happy news when new worries arise: a casual acquaintance is blackmailing her with compromising photos. Leslie fears that she could lose custody of her two children if this becomes known. Katja wouldn’t be Katja if she didn’t have an idea for tracking the man down and teaching him a lesson.
