Full plot (contains spoilers)

Sonja and Hubert Stahlgruber live with their eight-year-old twins on a farm, where they run a fish farm. While Nicki is the pride of the family, his twin sister Mathilda seems to have nothing but mischief on her mind. She also stands out at school because she is always occupied with things other than what she is supposed to be doing. After her latest prank, she is grounded. She soon gets bored, so she shows her brother that you can fly with an umbrella. Nicki doesn’t realize that Mathilda is tricking him and wants to imitate his sister. And so he jumps from an upstairs window of his parents’ house, holding the umbrella in his hands. As you might expect, it goes badly, and the boy is rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Village helper Katja Baumann is called in to look after Mathilda while her parents are at the clinic. Katja soon realizes that Mathilda isn’t simply trying to play pranks on others; she is actually highly intelligent, which leaves her feeling very insecure because the people around her misjudge her. In her father’s opinion, Mathilda shouldn’t spend so much time drawing, but should learn to read and write properly instead. At first, her parents want nothing to do with claims that she is gifted, but they eventually have her tested, and she scores an IQ of 130. Mathilda is proud that her father finally recognizes her as much as he does her brother, and that she will soon be able to attend a school where she can meet children like herself. Katja has plenty to deal with outside work, too. Her good friend Jan, who lives under the same roof as her, is also causing her concern because he can’t bring himself to tell his son Adrian about his cancer. Adrian, meanwhile, is torn when it comes to love. He really wants to be with Lilly, but his ex-girlfriend Nora is still in hospital and is making very little progress in her recovery. He wants to support her in her time of need, even if that means putting his own needs aside. Nora enjoys having everyone look after her to some extent, especially Adrian, of course. When it becomes clear that there is no medical reason why Nora still cannot walk, she has to face the truth. Generously, she sets Adrian free, but secretly she is still jealous of Lilly.
