Full plot (contains spoilers)
Lelio, a wealthy marquis, and his wife live on a remote island in a luxurious residence where they host social events attended by distinguished people from all over the world. Elena attends one dinner with her husband and becomes fascinated by Lelio. They begin a passionate, all-consuming affair, which leads them to decide to end their previous marriages and marry each other. The couple’s sexuality is uninhibited, and they begin involving other people—guests at their parties or people they happen to meet—in erotic games, taking part in almost orgiastic rituals. The marquis films the couple’s sexual encounters, but this becomes an obsession for him. Increasingly controlling, jealous, and manipulative toward Elena, he drives her into a deep depression and causes her to devalue herself. Elena finds happiness again when she meets another man and falls in love with him, realizing that her husband is no longer a vital part of her life and deciding to exclude him from it. Unable to accept losing absolute control over his wife and consumed by jealousy, Lelio kills her with a rifle during the 1970 New Year’s Eve celebrations, then immediately turns the weapon on himself.
