Full plot (contains spoilers)
A lady of evidently high rank is found in a mentally confused state in the woods and admitted to the nearest mental institution for examination. Master detective Stuart Webbs is called in to establish the identity of “the madwoman,” as she is soon called. He discovers that the lady is Countess de Castro and that she had been at a castle with her husband. They had been invited there by a former friend of her husband’s, a certain Monsieur de Mondro. But de Mondro had no good intentions. Soon after they arrived at the castle, its lord locked Count de Castro in a dungeon and tried to assault the countess. She defended herself with a halberd from the castle and killed the villainous scoundrel in self-defense. In shock, she ran from the castle into the nearby woods, where she eventually collapsed and was later found unconscious. Webbs hurries to the castle and frees the count from his dungeon.
