Full plot (contains spoilers)
Countess Gyllenhand has hired a new maid. Karoline Blume bears a striking resemblance to her and is also a gifted amateur actress with a passion for the theater. One day, the count and countess are away on a trip. Karoline, the countess’s kitchen maid, then disguises herself as her mistress and hosts a reception and supper for the prince of the state. Since he should not have to sit at the table alone, the rest of the servants are roped into posing as dinner guests. The festivities get a little out of hand, and as a result, the real countess is arrested for disturbing the peace when she returns home. She finds this rather embarrassing, so the highborn lady uses the same trick her maid did earlier: she pretends to be her own double and claims she is not Countess Gyllenhand at all, but merely the maid, Blume. Once they are both back home, the two women confess their respective little lies, and everything is back to normal.
