The story
In January 1945, as the Second World War progresses, German-Dutch Wehrmacht officer Ludwig Mengelberg faces horrors and difficult choices. Ordered by his superiors to execute captured partisans, he is tormented by his conscience. Transferred from the Eastern Front to Drenthe, where German occupiers are fighting the Allies advancing toward Groningen, he is billeted with the Wesseling farming family. They are alarmed by his arrival because people in hiding are staying in a nearby forest, placing Mengelberg in a fraught situation from the outset.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
It is January 1945, and Oberleutnant Ludwig Mengelberg, a German-Dutch officer in the Wehrmacht, is finding it increasingly difficult as the Second World War progresses. Der Fliegende Holländer, as he is nicknamed, is confronted with horrors and difficult choices. For example, on the orders of his superiors, he has to execute a group of captured partisans. Mengelberg is tormented by his conscience and breaks down when he receives news that his wife and daughter have been killed in a bombing near the front. He is transferred from the Eastern Front to Drenthe, where the German occupiers are fighting the Allies as they advance towards Groningen. The Wesseling farming family is alarmed when Mengelberg is billeted with them, because there are people in hiding in the neighboring forest. After some time, Mengelberg discovers their hiding place, but the story takes a bizarre turn when he falls in love with a Jewish woman in hiding and begins a relationship with her. In this dangerous situation, he puts not only his own life at risk, but also the lives of the farming family and the people in hiding whom he tries to help through a ruse. Both the SS and the Dutch resistance distrust Mengelberg, leaving him in a difficult position. 'Grenzeloos Verraad' is a story about a struggle between honor and conscience during the war. The film is set mainly in Drenthe and was shot at various locations in Drenthe (including the Industrial Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum, Veenpark and Ellert and Brammert Museum), Salland, Twente, and Germany.
