An investigator’s affair with the husband of a murdered TV presenter puts her career—and the search for the killer—at risk.

The story

When television presenter Sandra Berger is found beaten to death at her vacation home, investigator Ellen Norgard discovers that Berger’s husband, Jonas Gomez, is the man with whom she is having an affair. Ellen and Gomez were together at the time of the murder, making her the only person able to provide his alibi—but revealing the truth could end both their careers. Ellen confides in Karin and asks her to investigate the circumstances independently. Meanwhile, Ellen questions workers from a gardening company who had recently been at the property. Their accounts of visitors to the home, including an art dealer, begin to complicate the case.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The well-known TV presenter Sandra Berger is found beaten to death at her vacation home. To her surprise, investigator Ellen Norgard discovers at the crime scene that Berger’s husband, Jonas Gomez, is the man she is having an affair with. The situation is complicated by the fact that they were together at the time of the murder, and only Ellen could provide him with an alibi. But doing so would probably end both of their careers. To prevent Gomez from coming under suspicion, the real killer must be found quickly. Ellen confides in Karin and also tells her that Gomez is her son Jesper’s father. She asks Karin to support her and, on her own initiative, find out more about the circumstances of the crime. Ellen questions employees of a gardening company who had been working at the vacation home in recent days. They report seeing two visitors: a blonde woman and an art dealer from Greifswald, who had met the couple there twice. Ellen cannot question him herself because she once visited his gallery with Gomez to buy a painting. When Karin visits the art dealer, Schwenkers, she learns that one of his most successful artists, Gunilla Troppmann, died two years ago. Later, Gomez tells Karin that someone is blackmailing him, threatening to make his affair with Ellen public if he does not pay. Later, Gomez meets with Ellen to get to know his son. When a journalist posts on her private channel that Gomez has been having an affair for two years, the investigators seem to have found the main motive. Ellen breaks her silence and admits that she is the woman involved, whereupon she is relieved of her duties. Karin finds the woman who was seen at the vacation home. She is a museum director who authenticates paintings, and she had done so a few days earlier for a painting at the vacation home. When the police examine it again, they discover that it is a forgery. By this point, it is known that Lisa Bock, an employee of the gardening company, studied at Schwenkers’ art school. He had hired her for 5,000 euros to replace the painting with a copy. Sandra Berger, who was supposed to be at the gallery with Gomez at the time, caught Lisa in the act, so Lisa struck her dead with a brick. It turns out that Schwenkers had Lisa paint pictures for him, partly because his business had been doing poorly since Troppmann’s death. Schwenkers is arrested at his gallery. In the final scene, Ellen and Gomez say goodbye to each other on the beach. Ellen says that she will go to Denmark for a while “to get herself properly sorted out.”
