The story

A private investigator’s search for a missing man in Greece draws him into a trap tied to his wife’s fatal accident.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Hartwig Seeler, who gave up police work after his wife was killed in an accident and became a private investigator, is asked to search for a missing man who wanted to sell a house in Greece. The last sign of life was a photo showing him with a young woman outside a café. But when Seeler arrives on the Peloponnese peninsula, he is faced with a mystery: the missing man seems to be just as nonexistent as the house he wanted to sell. The woman, however, does exist—she just doesn’t know the man in the photo. Gradually, Seeler realizes that someone deliberately lured him to the Peloponnese, because the photo is a fake, and the connection between his personal tragedy and this place cannot be a coincidence. His wife Maria died here three years ago, and he still hasn’t come to terms with her death. The young woman in the photo is staying in a mysterious place, too: it is the very house where he spent his last vacation with Maria before she plunged down a ravine in her car without braking. And now almost the same thing happens to him. The brakes on his rental car fail, but fortunately he is only lightly injured. At first, Seeler suspects Sarah is behind it, but the more time he spends with her, the more convinced he becomes that she is sincere. He even regrets his suspicions when he realizes that Sarah is in mortal danger because of him. An unknown person sends a video to his phone showing that he has the young woman in his power. Seeler does everything he can to find Sarah. Working with a former police colleague in Germany, he discovers the identity of the man behind it all. Meanwhile, Bernd Widermann sends Seeler photos to show him how superior he is. Once he has lured Seeler to the place he wanted, he unexpectedly sets Sarah free. Seeler immediately takes her to Kalamata airport and sends her back to Germany so she will be safe. Then he sets out to find Widermann, solve the mystery, and settle the score with him. The trail leads to a tourist attraction that he last visited with Maria. Despite taking every precaution, Seeler is struck from behind. When he comes to, he is tied up, and Widermann is sitting in front of him. He claims that he had been with Maria before Seeler, and that Seeler had ruined things for him. Maria had been his “great love.” For that reason, he had wanted to punish her three years earlier and had caused the accident. Seeler had taken her from him, so he had taken her from Seeler: “Quid pro quo.” As a video game programmer, he knows how to kill without being punished. This is his game now. Move by move, they are heading into the abyss. Widermann points his gun at Seeler, and a shot rings out. Then he puts the pistol to his own neck.
