The film depicts the life of Hannie Schaft, a Dutch student who joins the Dutch Resistance in her mid-twenties to fight the German occupiers of her homeland. Because of her striking red hair, she is nicknamed “The Girl with the Red Hair” (Het meisje met het rode haar). After several more or less successful attacks, the German occupiers and Dutch collaborators search for her without success at first, until she is accidentally caught by them in March 1945, a few weeks before the end of the war.
