The story
Recently fired, Teresa lives with Pietro and their two-year-old son, Antonio, in a suburb of a city in Lazio. With work scarce and money tight, the couple faces financial difficulties. Pietro is unreliable, leaving Teresa to manage work, household responsibilities and childcare largely on her own. His behavior puts Teresa and Antonio at risk, adding to the pressures she faces as she tries to care for her son.

Teresa is a young woman who has just been fired. She lives with Pietro and their two-year-old son, Antonio, in a suburb of a city in Lazio. Like many young people their age, Teresa and Pietro have to contend with a lack of work and the resulting financial difficulties. Pietro, however, is not exactly the most reliable person, and Teresa has to do everything on her own, juggling work, home, and their son. Pietro’s behavior puts her and Antonio at risk, though, and to protect her son Teresa goes so far as to commit an extreme act that lands her in prison: she stabs a creditor after he tries to attack her. When she returns, Pietro and Antonio are there to welcome her—but the life she left ten years earlier is not.
