Full plot (contains spoilers)

Fourteen-year-old Lilli begins eating less and less. Her mother, Emma, suspects that Lilli has anorexia, but it turns out that she has acute myeloid leukemia. She goes to a specialist pediatric oncology unit in Munich for treatment. Since she is still relatively well at first, she has to go to the clinic every day but is otherwise allowed to stay with her father, Gerd, and his new wife, Waldi. There, her sister Mausi, a medical student, gives her injections, and she is visited by friends her own age and by Paula, her mother’s friend. Relations between Emma and Waldi are strained because Emma’s husband left her for Waldi. Later, their relationship improves. At the clinic, Lilli has to endure chemotherapy and consequently loses her hair. A boy at the clinic, Ali, falls in love with Lilli, who, however, has a crush on Tom, a volunteer doing a voluntary social year. Ali and Lilli become friends and witness each other suffering from the effects of a bone marrow transplant, including frequent vomiting. When Lilli learns of Ali’s death, she is very upset. Because the transplant shows no signs of success for a long time, Emma’s doubts about the goodness of God grow stronger too. The other people involved are also affected by the situation. More than two weeks after the transplant, the first signs of success appear. Lilli gradually gets well again and is allowed to go back home.
