The story
After years held prisoner in Siberia, returning soldier Beckmann discovers that his wife has turned to another man and his son has died. In despair, he believes he cannot go on. On the banks of the Elbe, he meets Anna Gehrke, a young widow who also no longer wants to continue. The two begin telling each other their life stories.
