La noche avanza (1952)

Marcos (Pedro Armendáriz) is a pelota player who courts many women, including Sara (Anita Blanch), a recent widow. Marcos deceives his lover, Lucrecia (Eva Martino), and spurns his wealthy sweetheart, Rebeca (Rebeca Iturbide). Meanwhile, Rebeca’s brother, Armando (Carlos Múzquiz), is in trouble with Marcial (José María Linares Rivas) over his debts from betting on frontón matches. After Sara is abandoned in Manila, Marcos visits her and promises to go with her to Havana. Lucrecia rejects Marcial, and Marcial fights Marcos in an empty cabaret. Marcos tries to persuade Rebeca to have an abortion, but she confesses that Marcos is the father of the child she is expecting. Marcos then asks Rebeca’s father to pretend to consent to their marriage, which leads Rebeca to try to kill herself. Armando stops her and learns that she is Marcos’s lover, so he slaps her. Marcial tries to force Marcos to lose a match because of Armando’s debt, but Armando pays it, so the pelota player wins and insults Marcial. Marcos offers the henchmen money in exchange for sparing his life and asks Sara for money to pay them, but when she cannot give him any, they struggle and she dies. Marcos gets Li Chan to cash a check for him and flees, but Rebeca catches up with him on a plane and kills him.
