The story

Angèle, Joseph, and Armand gather around their elderly father, Maurice, who became aphasic after a stroke. Angèle has not returned to her childhood home in 20 years, still devastated by the accidental death of her daughter Blanche. As the family shares memories of their calanque and its fading community, Angèle struggles with her father’s attempt to make amends through inheritance. Benjamin, a local fisherman who once admired Angèle’s acting, welcomes her return. Along the coast, soldiers patrol for migrants arriving from Africa. Then Joseph and Armand discover three parentless, freezing, starving children on a cliff and hide them in their home.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Angèle, Joseph, and Armand gather around Maurice, their elderly father, who became aphasic after a stroke. Angèle has not returned to her childhood home in 20 years, devastated by the accidental death of her daughter Blanche. They exchange melancholy memories of the calanque, once popular and communist, now given over to property speculation and stripped of its former social life. Angèle cannot accept that her father, overcome with remorse for being responsible for Blanche’s death while she was in his care, is leaving her a larger share of the inheritance than her brothers in an attempt to buy her forgiveness. Benjamin, a fisherman in his thirties from the calanque, is delighted to see Angèle again. He had greatly admired her as an actress at the theater in Marseille; she had inspired his love of the stage, and he is secretly in love with her. Meanwhile, armed soldiers regularly patrol the coast where migrants from Africa come ashore, in order to arrest them and send them back to their country. One day, the two brothers find three children on the cliff, parentless, freezing, and starving. They hide them in their home, bringing them face to face with a reality far more dramatic than the prevailing melancholy of their aging memories.
