The story

When a billposter sets out to remove the poster for Le comiche, Paolo and Renato suddenly come to life and climb out, taking charge of an ambulance while dressed as nurses. After removing an intrusive windshield washer from the hood, they answer an emergency call and arrive at an accident. Instead of helping the injured motorcyclist, they accidentally run over and transport a lawyer. Their chaotic ride takes the lawyer to the wrong hospital ward, setting off a series of comic mishaps.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

A poster billposter has to take down the poster for the film Le comiche, featuring Paolo and Renato, who suddenly come to life and climb out of the poster, driving an ambulance dressed as nurses. As soon as they are out of the poster, the two get rid of an intrusive windshield washer perched on the hood. Responding to an emergency call, they arrive at the scene of an accident but, instead of helping an injured motorcyclist, they accidentally run over and transport a lawyer. They put a Minnie Mouse mask on him and hit him on the head with an oxygen cylinder. After a chaotic ride to the hospital, the lawyer mistakenly ends up in the plastic surgery ward, where breast implants are put in him. The two are pursued by an enraged crowd after destroying a statue of the Madonna while driving the ambulance. They move through several hospital wards, leaving each one with the symptoms associated with it; finally, they burst into the tropical diseases ward, and everyone comes out dressed as Brazilian dancers. The two are security guards on night duty at a department store. After receiving a report of a nearby theft, they arrest a completely drunk man who had nothing to do with it, and hand their own guns over to a passing patrol car, mistakenly believing the man has them. Now disarmed, they enter the store and find improvised weapons, including baseball bats, a drill, a spear gun, and firecrackers. While searching, Paolo is almost mauled by a dog, while Renato hits a mannequin dressed as a kendo fighter, which runs off in pain. They find the real criminal, but he turns out to be a murderous brute, and the pursuers become the pursued. They flee along an outside ledge and, by good fortune, manage to knock him off using a bell tower; the thief falls into a Carabinieri van. Then both of them catch fire when the firecrackers in their pockets suddenly go off, and they have to jump into a fountain. Paolo and Renato own a ramshackle airline with a small aircraft (a Short SC.7 Skyvan) bound for Frankfurt am Main. Paolo steals fuel from other planes, ending up setting a man on fire; he then hides inside an aircraft turbine, which is switched on for a test. The passengers on the flight the two troublemakers are supposed to fly include a blind priest, a very tall man who plays basketball, an obese woman, Siamese twins, a man with a broken leg, and the lawyer from the first episode, who now has breasts as a result of the hospital mix-up. During takeoff, someone presses the cargo-bay door release, and all the luggage is suddenly flung out. At Milan airport, the two pilots think they have reached their destination and turn toward Morocco. One by one, all the passengers are accidentally pushed off the plane. The last one left is the lawyer, who is in his underwear, wearing a bra; he too falls from the plane and lands in a hospital, where he is mistaken for a transsexual and mistakenly undergoes a vaginoplasty. Finally, the two themselves plunge down, landing in a French Foreign Legion fort in the Sahara, thus bringing the first part of the film to a close. Just after enlisting in the Foreign Legion, Renato and Paolo repeatedly injure a colonel and, as punishment, are hung up for six hours by various parts of their bodies: their thumbs, big toes, and genitals. They are then chosen for a suicide mission (although, in fact, the other legionnaires simply took one step back, making it look as if the two had volunteered), which makes Renato cry with joy, while Paolo is afraid. Armed with a hand grenade, they are supposed to blow up some leaders of the rebel Tuareg raiders. In the raiders' village, their usual misadventures get them captured and sentenced to death. With the help of the lawyer, now an odalisque in the harem, the two escape into the desert, where they meet the Pope and take the opportunity to steal the Popemobile. They then stumble upon the Paris–Dakar Rally, which the pontiff will go on to win. The two work as department-store Santas. After a rigged drawing, Renato is hired by the butler of a wealthy judge to surprise the judge's family on Christmas Eve. Paolo secretly follows him, and the two end up doing nothing but making a mess and setting the villa on fire, ruining the little party. They escape in a police car and are immediately chased. In the same police car, they pass through several improbable places, including a bus and a water park. Finally, they stop near their poster, violently evict a nurse advertising diapers from it, and reclaim the billboard. They appear on it wearing adult diapers, alongside the words Le comiche 3, suggesting that the film will have a sequel (Le nuove comiche).
