Full plot (contains spoilers)

A girl, visibly agitated, enters a church and kneels before the altar, murmuring desperately to herself, “Oh God, what have I done?” As she loses consciousness, the distant sound of a police car siren can be heard. During a pursuit, Police Inspector Giuseppe Massa crashes violently into a dumpster. Hearing a groan coming from inside, he opens it and finds a naked man who speaks strangely and cannot remember who he is. Giuseppe thinks he caused the man’s amnesia and takes him to the police station to identify him, without telling anyone about the accident. There, the stranger meets a policewoman, Chiara, and falls in love with her. With nowhere to live, the stranger moves in with Giuseppe and his wife, Lucia, who begins to feel a kind of maternal love for him. All of this is watched over by two strange but amusing men dressed in white: Tiresia, who is blind, and his assistant, Bile. Giuseppe discovers the stranger’s feelings for the policewoman and tries to help the young man develop a closer relationship with her. But Chiara does not return the man’s love, because of his unusual, childlike behavior and because she has become involved with the police commissioner, who, being already married, does not have the courage to declare his feelings for her. Until one night, the stranger goes beneath his beloved’s window and reveals his mad love for her: passion immediately flares between them. Later, the police officers try to make the stranger remember who he is by staging the car accident a second time. But just as the car is about to hit the dumpster, the stranger’s mother appears and stops it. She confesses that she abandoned him in a dumpster as soon as he was born, having given birth to him when she was only fifteen. Then an angel appears out of nowhere and tells everyone that the stranger is a spirit who, after experiencing what he would have lived through on Earth, was supposed to return to Heaven. But he does not want to leave Chiara, Giuseppe, and Lucia, who have shown him so much affection. Despite this, he vanishes before the eyes of all those dear to him. Later, the girl from the beginning is shown—in reality, the stranger’s mother—who had dreamed the whole story. In tears, she goes to retrieve the baby from the dumpster, saving him from certain death. Finally, it is revealed that all the characters in the film were saints who had intervened in the girl’s dream, behaving like real actors in order to persuade her to change her mind. At the end of the film, all the saints who intervened in the dream succeed in their aim, and the baby is named Ciro in honor of the saint.
