The story

In the Alsatian village of Hochpfeiferheim, grumpy Hubert considers Christmas mercantile and capitalist. He quarrels with the mayor, who has placed a giant Santa beneath his windows and wants him to join the Christmas decorations contest. While covering his half-timbered house with anti-Christmas signs, Hubert falls from a ladder and breaks his leg. The mayor arranges a home aide: Nora, a cheerful young single mother from Paris who lives on poorly paid odd jobs. Her doctor has advised her to leave the polluted capital because of her ten-year-old son’s asthma. Nora’s arrival upends Hubert’s daily life.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In the Alsatian village of Hochpfeiferheim, a grumpy old man named Hubert takes the Christmas preparations very badly, considering the holiday mercantile and capitalist. He quarrels with the village mayor, who puts up a giant Santa Claus beneath his windows and reproaches him for refusing to take part in the Christmas decorations contest, on which the village’s reputation depends, even though he owns the most beautiful house in the village. But as he covers his magnificent half-timbered house with anti-Christmas signs such as “Boycott Christmas,” “The Rip-Off Celebration,” “Santa Claus = Trash,” and “Christmas Imposed, Forced Happiness,” to the jeers of the village children, he falls off his ladder and breaks a leg. The mayor finds him a home aide in the form of Nora, a young single mother from Paris who lives on poorly paid odd jobs and whose doctor has advised her to leave the capital, which is much too polluted for her 10-year-old son, who has asthma. The arrival of this cheerful, energetic and lively young woman upends the grumpy old man’s daily life.
