As Sister Hanna accompanies Mayor Wöller to Rome shortly before Christmas, the nuns in Kaltenthal must keep their Mother Superior from discovering that Hanna left on her own initiative.
The story
Shortly before Christmas, Kaltenthal mayor Wolfgang Wöller asks Sister Hanna, head of the local convent, to accompany him to Rome after receiving a Vatican invitation. There, they learn he was invited to a large event at St. Peter’s Basilica rather than the private papal audience he expected. Though they want to leave, a pilots’ strike makes their return difficult. Back in Kaltenthal, the nuns prepare their annual children’s Christmas celebration as Mother Superior Elisabeth Reuter’s predecessor arrives. They must keep Elisabeth from learning that Hanna went to Rome on her own initiative. Heavily pregnant Laura Berger is also traveling with Hanna and Wöller, hoping to find her child’s father in Munich.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Shortly before Christmas, Wolfgang Wöller, mayor of the fictional Lower Bavarian town of Kaltenthal, receives an invitation from the Vatican. He asks Sister Hanna, the head of the local convent, to accompany him. The two travel to Rome, where it turns out that Wöller was not invited, as he had assumed, to a private audience with the Pope, but only to a large event in St. Peter’s Basilica. Disappointed, they want to leave, but their return journey proves extremely difficult because of a general strike by the pilots. Meanwhile, the other nuns of Kaltenthal are preparing the annual children’s Christmas celebration at the convent, while Mother Superior Elisabeth Reuter is unexpectedly visited by her predecessor. The former Mother Superior will not accept any excuse for not spending this Christmas in Kaltenthal, so the nuns have to come up with a way to keep her from discovering that Sister Hanna has gone to Rome on her own initiative. In the meantime, Mayor Wöller and Sister Hanna manage to borrow a car from an Italian priest after their first rental car from the hotel had prematurely “given up the ghost.” The heavily pregnant Laura Berger is also traveling with them; she wants to seek out the father of her child in Munich, who knows nothing about her pregnancy. Sister Hanna accompanies Laura to the home of the wealthy businessman Gablonzer and sees Laura turned away there. So she promptly takes her to the convent in Kaltenthal. Unwilling to let the matter rest, Hanna drives back to Munich and speaks with Otto Gablonzer, the future grandfather. He remains dismissive and explains that his son is away on a business trip. However, the household servant secretly tips Hanna off that the young Mr. Gablonzer is still at the airport. Hanna promptly drives to the airfield and persuades Martin Gablonzer to come with her to the convent in Kaltenthal. The Mother Superior arrives just then, and the Christmas celebration begins after Laura has also gone into labor. Sister Felicitas is delighted that they will now have a real Christ Child for Christmas. When Sister Hanna and Martin Gablonzer join them, the happy ending is complete.
