A family’s traditional Christmas Eve gathering is shadowed by tension beneath the surface.
The story
At the home of Katrine and Mads, an ordinary family tries once again to bring everyone together for a traditional Christmas Eve, complete with hymns and roast duck. The gathering must make room for divorced parents, the youngest sister and her new husband, and the couple’s teenage children. Their teenage daughter is struggling to get her mother’s attention. Beneath the surface of the family’s attempt at a peaceful holiday, tension is brewing, with the evening poised to test the Christmas harmony everyone insists upon.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
At the home of Katrine and Mads, a perfectly ordinary family with a couple of teenage children, they once again have to try to bring the whole family together this year for a traditional Christmas Eve with hymn-singing and roast duck. On an evening like this, there has to be room for everyone: the divorced parents, the youngest sister and her new husband, and, not least, the family’s teenage daughter, who is struggling to get her mother’s attention. Beneath the surface, an explosion is brewing, as combustible as a dry fir tree, and when the truths start flying across the table, every illusion of Christmas peace—the one everyone insists on so fervently—shatters.
