After they meet again, their attraction develops into a passionate affair that Marie regards as exclusively physical, without emotional involvement. As she becomes absorbed in the relationship, she loses interest in her work and neglects her husband and their two-year-old son. The affair begins to unsettle the balance of Marie’s married life.

Marie sells encyclopedias and has been married to Francois for 12 years, but lately their sex life no longer seems to satisfy her. One day, during a work appointment at someone’s home, she meets Bill, an African-American dancer visiting Paris. After a third meeting, the two begin a passionate, uninhibited affair that is exclusively physical, with no emotional involvement. Swept up in her passion, Marie begins to lose interest in her work and neglects her husband and their two-year-old son. When Francois discovers the affair, he leaves his wife. Some time later, Marie and her ex-husband meet at a party and, despite the adultery having wrecked their marriage, realize they still love each other.
