Full plot (contains spoilers)
Thierry, who has an intellectual disability, is raising his little daughter, Luce, on his own, with support from an elderly couple who run the scrapyard where he works. At six, Luce starts her first year of school. Though reluctant at first, she grows to enjoy reading and learning. When she asks her father for help with an assignment, Luce realizes that he can neither read nor write. To avoid making her father uncomfortable in front of the authorities or herself, Luce decides to stop learning and leave school. After Luce has been absent from school for two months, Solange, her teacher, becomes concerned about the prolonged recovery from what had initially been described as a mere stomachache. When Solange visits their home, Luce’s father proves unable to handle the situation. Solange then decides to refer the matter to social services, which in turn decide to place little Luce in a residential care home.
