The story
Eighty-one-year-old Lina Braake has the right to live in her rental building for life, but after its owner dies, the property passes to the bank. As the bank renovates, Lina is moved to a retirement home; furious and unsure what to do, she meets Gustav Härtlein, an 84-year-old retired bank clerk declared legally incompetent after bank frauds. Lina sees him as a partner in taking revenge on the bank. Gustav persuades her that a country house in Sardinia would be a better place to spend their final years, though they lack the money to make that dream possible.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Lina Braake is 81 years old. She lives in a rental building, where the owner has granted her the right to live there for the rest of her life. But when he dies, his debts are set against the value of the building, which now belongs to the bank. The bank begins renovating the building and moves Lina Braake into a retirement home. The old woman is furious about this, but does not know what she can do. At the retirement home, she meets 84-year-old Gustav Härtlein, a retired bank clerk who has been declared legally incompetent because of various bank frauds and can no longer be held criminally responsible. In him, she has found the right partner to take revenge on the bank. Gustav convinces Lina that a country house in Sardinia would be a much better place to spend their final years. They have only one thing missing to make their dream come true: the necessary money. But Gustav has an idea. Together, they devise a plan to defraud the bank through a loan, and it even succeeds. The money from the fraudulent loan goes to a Sardinian guest worker, who uses it to buy the house in Sardinia, and Lina receives the right to live there for the rest of her life. The bank catches on to her soon afterward, and Lina Braake is charged, but is not convicted because of her advanced age. The Sardinian family gets to keep the house, and Lina thus keeps her right to live there.
