The story
Thirty-eight-year-old intellectual Giulio Cerioni is unhappy and hopes to find success through a major real-estate venture in Sardinia. Unable to afford the land, he turns to old acquaintances for loans and goes to great lengths to secure them, eventually losing his dignity.

Thirty-eight-year-old intellectual Giulio Cerioni is an unhappy man who seeks success through a major real-estate venture in Sardinia. Unable to afford the land, Giulio goes to great lengths to secure loans from old acquaintances, eventually losing all his dignity. In the end, he manages to obtain the money he needs, but at the cost of the lives of family members and friends, in whose eyes he now seems like a different person. He loses his only friend, Sergio, and his wife, Laura, in exchange for a wealthy life without friendship or love.
