Lontano lontano (2019)

Giorgetto struggles to get by in Rome on his meager pension, so one day he has an idea that he shares with the Professor, who, like him, is elderly and retired, bored and dissatisfied with the hardships he is forced to endure every day. Giorgetto would like to consider moving abroad, to a country where the cost of living is lower. To this end, he approaches a third man, whom he does not know, but who is said to have a brother who has already made this choice. In fact, Attilio’s brother lives in Terracina, but the idea intrigues him, so he decides to consult an expert he knows for the right advice. Armed with the tips from the learned man they consulted, the three become convinced to take the big step and, after weighing the various options, decide that their destination will be the Azores. They begin making serious preparations, but just after they have built up a substantial fund, Attilio and the Professor realize they have changed their minds. The money they collected can therefore be put to better use by giving it to Abu, a young Malian who wants to join his brother in Canada, whom Giorgetto had helped and introduced to the others. Perhaps their situation is not as desperate as they themselves made it out to be, and friendship can help overcome loneliness and melancholy without the need to go far away.
