The story
Returning from a trip to Turkey, a son spends a few days in Paris with his mother, an eccentric literary critic who lives surrounded by books and neuroses. The visit quickly becomes difficult: he feels trapped in her home and struggles against the physical and emotional suffocation he experiences there. The arrival of his sister, a young mother, offers a change in the atmosphere, but her visit also brings the family’s painful past into focus. The siblings must each find their own way of coping with an enduring loss.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Returning from a trip to Turkey, a son spends a few days in Paris with his mother, a somewhat eccentric literary critic who lives shut away amid her books and neuroses. He soon finds himself trapped in his mother’s lair and tries to escape the physical and emotional suffocation she imposes on him. His sister’s visit, though she is a young mother and brings a little breathing room, brings to the surface the suicide of a younger brother—a loss from which no one in the family emerged unscathed, and which each of them tries to cope with through their own survival strategies.
