The story

In Marseille’s Old Port, César runs the Bar de la Marine with his son, Marius, who dreams of leaving aboard one of the boats passing the bar and traveling to distant lands. Fanny, a young shellfish seller who has secretly loved him for years, is also loved by Marius, though he has never confessed it. Hoping to keep him from leaving, Fanny declares her feelings and makes him jealous by drawing the attention of Panisse, an older friend of César who is courting her. Full plot (contains spoilers)

In Marseille’s Old Port, César runs the Bar de la Marine with his son, Marius. However, the young man dreams of boarding one of the boats that pass in front of the bar and setting off for distant lands. Fanny, a pretty young shellfish seller, has been secretly in love with Marius for years. He, too, is in love with her, but has never managed to tell her. To keep Marius from giving in to his desire to travel, Fanny declares her love for him and makes him jealous of Panisse, an old friend of César’s who, despite being much older, is courting Fanny. Despite his desire to leave, Marius gives up his plans and decides to choose Fanny. Against all expectations, Marius gives in to the call of the sea and boards a ship with Fanny’s help; she would rather see him happy far away from her than dissatisfied by her side.
