To koritsi me ta mavra (1956)

Marina (Elli Lambeti) lives on Hydra with her mother, Froso (Eleni Zafeiriou), and her brother, Mitsos (Anestis Vlahos). Her mother, a widow, is involved with Panagos (Stefanos Stratigos), who is younger than she is, and has therefore given the islanders cause to talk. This enrages Mitsos, who believes that, according to the customs of the time, he must defend the family’s honor. He chooses to do so by beating his mother in public. A tragic situation prevails in the family home, one Marina cannot cope with. Two friends, Pavlos (Dimitris Horn) and Antonis (Notis Pergialis), come to the island for a vacation and rent rooms in Marina’s house. Pavlos begins to show an interest in Marina, and the two young people fall in love. But Christos (Giorgos Foundas), a fisherman on the island who is in love with Marina, does everything he can to win her over. Marina hates him because he was responsible for the death of her only beloved older sister. Plotting with his friends, Christos punctures the boat Pavlos was going to take out. The boat sinks, and three little children drown, among the many Pavlos had taken out for a ride. After the accident, Marina discovers who was responsible, confronts Christos, and forces him to turn himself in. His confession will ease Pavlos’s guilt. Marina, who loves Pavlos, asks him to leave the island and make a fresh start. Pavlos agrees, but the next day he changes his mind once again and stays to live with Marina.
