Full plot (contains spoilers)
In a series of seemingly random tableaux, we see a summer in the lives of a small group of people in their thirties. The story takes place mostly in Berlin, but also in Paris and southern Germany. The architecture student Valerie spends six months in Berlin, while her friend Sophie’s job takes her to Rome. Valerie gets along well with her new neighbors, the married couple Marie and Alexander and their nine-year-old daughter Clara. Through Marie and Alexander, Valerie meets Thomas, who has recently divorced, and starts a relationship with him. She travels to southern Germany to visit her seriously ill father and his lover. Thomas goes to Paris. Valerie attends the wedding of Clara’s 21-year-old nanny, Marie, where the band Mutter performs. Marie decides to have an abortion; Alexander has a second apartment and an affair. Sophie returns to Berlin and waits in vain for Valerie at a café, but meets the customer at the next table there. Valerie mourns her deceased father.
