The story
A young couple in Berlin is struggling to stay together after the birth of their child. The man, once an aspiring writer, has become lethargic after his manuscripts were rejected and spends most of his time at home. His partner, the family’s sole earner and currently on maternity leave, is energetic and driven. Their contrasting ways of living fuel repeated arguments. After she arranges an evening out with a friend, she returns in the early morning, and he accuses her of not having been with that friend. The confrontation intensifies, prompting her to call Baste, her lover, and prepare to leave with only the essentials.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A young Berlin couple has reached the breaking point in their relationship, despite having a newborn child. The man, whose literary ambitions have turned into lethargy after his manuscripts were rejected, spends almost all his time at home. The woman, who alone earns the money to support them and is currently on maternity leave, is instead full of energy and initiative. Their differing lifestyles lead to constant arguments. The man's parents stop by briefly to see their grandchild, then quickly leave again. The woman arranges to go to a club with a friend. When she returns in the early hours of the morning, the man claims she was not out with her friend. The situation escalates; the woman calls her lover, Baste, to come and get her, and packs the bare essentials for a hurried move-out. When Baste arrives, the man withdraws to another room. As she packs, the woman becomes increasingly absorbed in the thought that they had “actually had it good together” and admits that she is not yet ready for a separation. Her lover leaves the apartment disappointed. A noise from the other room prompts her to check on the man. He has thrown himself from the balcony to his death.
