When Eva returns with her family for her ailing father’s possibly last birthday, old tensions give way to danger during a trip into the Bavarian Forest.
The story
Eva lives in Berlin with her husband Peter and their children, Nina and Jonas, but they have little contact with her parents after painful events in the past. Her father Anton, whose health is failing, plans a birthday party that may be his last, and Eva decides the family should attend. Peter initially stays behind to avoid a confrontation, then changes his mind and joins them. At the party, Eva reunites with Berno, her childhood sweetheart, now a national park ranger. He invites the family on a day trip into the Bavarian Forest. After an argument with Peter, Jonas runs deeper into the forest and encounters people smugglers.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Eva’s father, Anton, suffers a bout of weakness while out hunting—the third time this month. But he has no intention of resting or having the operation that should have been performed long ago. Instead, he plans his birthday party with all his friends—half the local shooting club. Eva lives in Berlin with her husband and their two children, 18-year-old Nina and 15-year-old Jonas. They have little contact with Eva’s parents. Too much has happened in the past. Peter, Eva’s husband, used to be in a relationship with Eva’s older sister, Marie, who died giving birth to Nina. Afterward, Eva took care of Nina and Peter. What began as an act of kindness turned into love, and the two married. Anton could never forgive Eva and Peter for this. Since Anton’s birthday might be his last, Eva is determined to go there with her family. To avoid a confrontation with Eva’s father, Peter stays in Berlin, but then changes his mind and travels after them. At the birthday party, Jonas overhears a conversation between Eva and her father and learns that Nina is only his half-sister. At the party, Eva also runs into Berno, her childhood sweetheart. He works as a national park ranger in the Bavarian Forest. He suggests taking a day trip in the Bavarian Forest the next day. The day starts well. Berno shows the family many beautiful spots, and Peter notices the old familiarity between Eva and Berno. After an argument between Jonas and Peter, Jonas runs farther into the forest and comes across a group of people smugglers. When Berno confronts them, he is shot dead, and the family’s nightmare begins. Because the smugglers do not want to be exposed, Eva, Anton, Nina, and Jonas must die. Anton stands up to the smugglers, giving the other three a chance to escape. A ruthless manhunt through the national park begins, and the family fights for their lives, while Nina also learns who her biological mother is.
