A Milanese crime boss is pulled into a gang war when a rival tries to expand into his prostitution business and drug dealing.
The story
Salvatore Cangemi, a Sicilian settled in Milan, runs a fruit-and-vegetable company that conceals his real business: exploiting prostitutes. He sees himself as Milan’s undisputed master, but that confidence is shaken when his best “girl” is found drowned in his club. The killer, Roger Daverty—known as Le Capitaine—wants to form a business alliance and have Cangemi’s prostitutes deal drugs. Their competing interests ignite a war between the gangs while the police look on. With the conflict at a standstill, Cangemi’s associate urges him to seek help from Billy Barone, an Italian-American Mafia boss recently returned to Sicily.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Salvatore Cangemi is a Sicilian who has settled in Milan. He owns a fruit and vegetable company that is actually a front for his real business: exploiting prostitutes. He considers himself the undisputed master of Milan, until he finds his best “girl” drowned in his club. The murder was committed by Roger Daverty, known as Le Capitaine, who wants to go into business with him and have his prostitutes deal drugs. A war between the two gangs begins, with the police merely looking on. The situation remains deadlocked until Cangemi’s associate advises him to turn to Billy Barone, an Italian-American Mafia boss who has recently returned to Sicily. Barone agrees, although Cangemi disapproves of his overly “thought-out” methods. In the end, however, they pay off, and the mobsters corner the Frenchman. But by then Cangemi no longer seems to care: he has fallen hopelessly in love with Jasmina and buys a sumptuous villa on the French Riviera, where they move in together. The extravagant expenses he incurs for Jasmina delay his payments of the agreed shares, prompting both the Frenchman and the Italian-American to complain. But Jasmina is actually just a prostitute hired by the Frenchman to play both sides. Cangemi realizes this and decides to flee, but the police arrive at his house, search it, and find heroin. He understands that he has been framed, but manages to escape anyway. He wants to kill the Frenchman, but finds him already dead. Billy Barone and his associates finally kill Cangemi.
