A queen reunites the aging musketeers for a mission to stop a plot against Huguenot families fleeing France.
The story
After many years apart, Queen Anne of Austria summons the old musketeers to thwart Mazarin, who is persecuting the Huguenots and plotting to blow up the port from which their families are leaving for England. She recruits D’Artagnan, now a pig farmer, to contact his former companions. He finds Athos, who lives for sex despite having syphilis, then Aramis, a friar hiding from gambling debts, and Porthos, who has given himself over to alcohol and opium. The queen asks the reunited group to stop the massacre. Their mission requires finding Cicognac, who can guide them to the secret port.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The Queen of France, Anne of Austria, travels to summon the three musketeers once again, after many years, for a mission against Mazarin. She then meets D'Artagnan, who has become a pig farmer, and persuades him to contact his old companions. D'Artagnan goes to Athos, who now lives only for sex, despite suffering from syphilis, and then they set out together to track down Aramis, who lives as a friar to escape his gambling debts. Finally, they go to Porthos, who has given himself over to alcohol and opium. At the royal court, the queen explains that Mazarin is violently persecuting the Huguenots and wants to blow up the port from which Huguenot families themselves are setting sail for England. The queen asks them to intervene and prevent the massacre. After dining with Louis XIV, who proves to be a spoiled ruler surrounded by numerous courtiers, they set off on their mission to find Cicognac, the person who can take them to the secret port and put them aboard a ship. On the way, they stop at an inn for the night, where they confront Mazarin's spies. They find Cicognac, who turns out to be a woman, and arrange to embark that night, but they fall into Mazarin's trap. Having learned the location, he sends a group of his henchmen, who are defeated. Mazarin then sends the "crepuscular" Milady, the courtesan he uses to keep Louis XIV under his control. She meets them on the road to the port and pretends to be in trouble with her carriage. After the musketeers help her, Milady lays a trap for them during the night, but this attempt also fails. Mazarin tells the queen that the musketeers are dead, but she, unconvinced, sends Olympia, her maid, to check. Olympia finds them alive, and Mazarin, devising a last-ditch attempt, has the king kidnapped and blames the Huguenots. To save the king, the queen sends Olympia again to find them. The musketeers find the king at the border with Spain and free him, but Mute Servant, the mute, pain-insensitive assistant who has accompanied the four musketeers on their mission, sacrifices himself to save the king. It is finally revealed that the whole story was imagined by a child who, while reading a book titled 'The King's Musketeers,' gave the characters the faces of everyone in his dysfunctional family to get over the grief of his uncle Sergio's death. Sergio is the story's Mute Servant, and his funeral is being held.
