When her parents descend on Berlin, furniture-restorer Nele must keep her abandoned pharmacy studies—and a forged-signature loan—secret.

The story

Nele Schiller has abandoned pharmacy studies to restore old furniture in her small Berlin workshop, though her parents expect her to take over her father's pharmacy in Bad Homburg. She has concealed both her career change and Polish boyfriend, and taken out a loan with her father Hans-Peter's forged signature. During a weekend when her mother Franziska visits Berlin for an art symposium, Hans-Peter unexpectedly follows. Nele must maintain the appearance that she is still a pharmacy student, sort out the loan and finish an urgent commission. Meanwhile, Franziska seeks a curator's post at the Bode Museum with an exhibition proposal.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Nele Schiller lives in Berlin and is passionate about restoring old furniture in her small workshop, for which she gave up her pharmacy studies. Her parents must not find out: the plan was for her to take over her father's pharmacy in Bad Homburg. On top of that, she has taken out a loan using her father Hans-Peter's forged signature, and her parents also know nothing about Nele's Polish boyfriend. One weekend, when Nele's mother Franziska travels to Berlin for an art symposium, Hans-Peter also heads to the capital on a whim after receiving a phone call, to check on his apartment building. He actually wants to find out what his wife is doing there, since he can't stand the city. Franziska is taking the opportunity to apply for a curator's position at the Bode Museum. Under the theme “Children's Pictures – Picture Children,” she plans to exhibit works by artists and children together. At the museum, two young employees reject her proposal, but she has an idea for how she might still win over the director. When Hans-Peter announces that he is coming to see her, Nele has to improvise to maintain the appearance that she is a pharmacy student and sort out the loan—at precisely the weekend when she has to work around the clock on a commission. At Nele's building, Hans-Peter runs into his former fellow student Ulli, who helps out with repairs in the apartment building. He lives quite modestly but is happy with it—a fact the ever-ambitious Hans-Peter cannot understand. The two part in an argument over their different views of life. With the help of Ajmal, a taxi driver she met at the start of her trip, Franziska manages to sneak into an art collector Gastein's gala and win him over to her proposal. Gastein would lend the museum a painting if her concept were adopted. Overjoyed, Franziska kisses Ajmal, but after a brief moment of reflection, she says goodbye to him and returns to Hans-Peter. The next morning, Hans-Peter catches Nele in her work clothes, and shortly afterwards she confesses that she quit her studies. He also meets Nele's boyfriend. A mishap reveals that the boyfriend has a wife and children in Poland, whereupon Nele breaks up with him. Hans-Peter, dismayed by everything, leaves the building, finds a kayak on the Spree, and paddles through Berlin. For the first time, he is struck by the beauty of the city he hates, but then collides with a boat and is taken to hospital. Ulli brings Hans-Peter some things at the hospital, and the two make up. Nele and Franziska join them, and the family clears the air. As they all walk along the Spree, Hans-Peter considers leaving the pharmacy to his assistant and coming to Berlin more often if Franziska takes the curator's job.
