Full plot (contains spoilers)
The story is set in the 1970s. Kazimierz Pawlak and Władysław Kargul, migrants from beyond the Bug River who are well regarded by the village community, have no heir capable of inheriting their farms. Their children—the son of Pawlak and the daughter of Kargul—have a farm of their own and a daughter, Ania, to whom Pawlak and Kargul plan to leave their land in their wills. Ania is dating Zenek, a bachelor and young agronomist from a nearby State Agricultural Farm. Pawlak and Kargul intend to match them, but Ania’s parents oppose the idea, alarmed by their daughter’s hasty marriage and by Zenek’s unfamiliarity as a newcomer who seems to have come from nowhere. Despite Pawlak’s doubts about Zenek’s origins, Ania and Zenek marry at the Civil Registry Office and arrive at the wedding celebration hastily arranged by their grandparents. Zenek then declares that he will not have the church wedding the grandparents planned, because it is contrary to his beliefs. Outraged, Pawlak interrupts the celebration and confines his granddaughter to the house.
