To escape her uncle’s plan to marry her to a wealthy French count, spirited Ilona disguises herself as a boy and flees to Vienna, where her sister Susanne lives.
The story
In Hungary, Ilona’s uncle wants her married quickly to a wealthy French count, a match he hopes will secure his position as steward of the Maria Theresa estate. Ilona rejects the plan, disguises herself as a boy, and escapes to Vienna, where her sister Susanne lives. Meanwhile, Swabian soldiers stationed in Hungary have taken to the estate’s celebrated Tokay. Their former sergeant, Jedele, wants to procure women for his men, but Count von Seibersdorf refuses to approve the scheme. Susanne, meanwhile, must contend with the count’s advances as she tries to sort out her sister’s tangled love life.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In Hungary, young Ilona is quite a handful and keeps the men in a considerable stir. So her uncle, the steward of the Maria Theresa estate, wants to get the spirited Puszta girl married off as soon as possible—and, above all, to a wealthy man. Who could be better suited than the French Count de Champenoise, an ugly, hunchbacked man of the world who could secure the uncle’s position as estate steward? Ilona, however, is altogether opposed to the idea, so she disguises herself as a boy with short black hair and escapes to Vienna, where her sister Susanne, formerly the landlady of the inn by the Lahn, lives. Meanwhile, the Swabian soldiers under Officer Jedele have become devoted to the fine wines of the famous Maria Theresa coronation Tokay. But Jedele also looks after his men’s welfare in other ways: for the Swabians stationed in Hungary, the former sergeant wants to procure women for their pleasure and their beds. The powerful Count von Seibersdorf, however, refuses to approve this scheme, which he denounces as immoral. But since the nobleman is quite corrupt, he can be bought around with a few casks of the famous, fine Tokay. Count Seibersdorf is also very interested in getting a sexually enticing woman into bed through Jedele himself. He makes advances to the landlady Susanne, who has her hands full trying to sort out her sister Ilona’s tangled love life. Beyond Susanne’s looks, Count Seibersdorf is especially interested in her money; he hopes to become even richer by marrying the former landlady. But Susanne shows no affection at all for the affected dandy, as she has someone else entirely in mind.
