Full plot (contains spoilers)

As the shepherd Jan’s father is dying, he tells his son that after his death, the family’s entire estate will pass to the moneylender. During Jan’s childhood, the plague wiped out the family’s entire flock of sheep, and the moneylender helped them. In return, when Jan’s father died, he demanded the family’s entire estate. All that remains for Jan is a heart-shaped ruby, which a mysterious stranger placed in his cradle and which is supposed to bring him good luck one day. Jan sees his chance when Princess Agnes promises both her hand in marriage and the fulfillment of one heartfelt wish to whoever can guess the three things she is thinking of; anyone who fails is turned to stone. While stopping overnight in a church on his journey, Jan catches two robbers trying to plunder the body laid out there. He gives them his only coin so they will leave the dead man in peace. Later, Jan is attacked by the crooks, but a mysterious stranger comes to his aid. The two travel together to Princess Agnes and are pursued by the thieves. Along the way, Jan encounters a demon several times, intent on stealing the ruby, but his traveling companion manages to stop it. When Jan reaches the castle, Agnes’s father warns him by showing him the men who guessed wrong and were turned to stone. He tells Jan that when his daughter was 16, she was possessed by an alien power. Jan is overcome with fear, but his traveling companion urges him to face the challenge. That night, the companion follows the princess to the demon’s cave, where the demon feeds on the life force of the men turned to stone and needs the ruby to attain eternal life. It is the same demon that had tried to steal the ruby from Jan in various forms. With the companion’s help, Jan guesses correctly twice. On the third night, Jan follows the princess into the cave, where he and the demon fight. Jan defeats the demon, and the next morning he finds the third correct answer: love. Jan wishes for all the petrified men to come back to life. As his wish is granted, the demon itself turns to stone. Jan becomes king and marries Agnes. His traveling companion sees that Jan no longer needs him and leaves.
