During the pandemic, a pastor’s wife reconnects with an old friend—and finds herself drawn into an affair.
The story
Elli lives with her husband Mikko, a pastor, on an island in Finland’s Turku Archipelago. When Mikko brings home Olav, an old acquaintance and friend, Olav’s presence stirs memories of a past Elli had nearly forgotten. With the coronavirus pandemic limiting contact with others, the visitor’s company initially offers a welcome change for the couple. But Mikko is often away running errands, leaving Elli and Olav together. As they spend time amid the Finnish countryside, Elli’s longings and appetite for adventure begin to surface, setting up a conflict between her established marriage and the feelings awakened by Olav.

Elli lives with her husband Mikko, a pastor, on an island in the Turku Archipelago in Åboland, in southwestern Finland, near the city of Turku (Åbo in Swedish). One day, Mikko brings along an old acquaintance and friend, Olav. Through him, Elli is reminded of days she had almost forgotten. It is therefore not long before the past catches up with the middle-aged woman. At the same time, the coronavirus pandemic has the world in its grip, so there is little contact with other people. For the couple, having some different company around is a welcome change. But Mikko is repeatedly out driving to run errands. As a result, a passionate affair quickly develops between Elli and Olav. Amid the beautiful Finnish countryside, female longings and the urge for adventure rise closer to the surface day by day.
