Full plot (contains spoilers)
In the small town of Niedernussdorf in Lower Bavaria, a wire-haired dachshund finds the severed finger of a man. This brings Chief Inspector Lederer from nearby Straubing onto the case. He discovers that the finger was bitten off by a pig and concludes that a man must have been killed in Niedernussdorf recently and fed to pigs. Local police officer Gisela Wegmeyer is unconvinced by this theory; she believes it was an accident. Tensions arise between the two officers when Lederer’s suspicions fall on pig farmers Matthias and Anne Berner. Then the remains of a fire are discovered in a wooded area, with an artificial hip joint among them. This seems to confirm that there was a corpse, and the officers intensify their investigation. Gisela suspects that Monika Baumgartner’s elderly mother-in-law, who is supposedly away at a health resort, is no longer alive. When it turns out that the ashes found in the woods clearly came from an old woman, her suspicion is confirmed. To avoid losing Mathilda Baumgartner’s pension, someone had intended to feed the old woman to the pigs, but Gerhard Baumgartner had tried to save his wife’s body from this fate; in the process, pig number four bit off his finger. Ultimately, his son burned the body in the woods. Police officer Gisela Wegmeyer is simply horrified.
