The story

After a performance, Vienna musician Kurt Ostbahn stops at his regular haunt, the Espresso Rallye, where he and its owner witness a loud argument between Wickerl, a petty criminal and musician, and Rudi, a temporary worker. Later, on his way home, Kurt finds Wickerl’s badly mutilated body. The next morning, Kommissarin Franziska Sedlacek and Inspektor Skocik wake him with a bad hangover. Sedlacek is more sympathetic than her overzealous young colleague, who is determined to believe Kurt is the culprit. Kurt decides to investigate the crime himself, with help from his musician friend Trainer, who is interested in crime-solving.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After a performance, Kurt Ostbahn, a musician known throughout Vienna, stops by his regular haunt, the “Espresso Rallye.” There, he and the owner, Mr. Josef, witness a loud argument between Wickerl, a petty criminal and musician, and Rudi, who works there as a temp. Some time and several Fernets later, Kurt Ostbahn sets off for home and finds Wickerl’s badly mutilated body. The next morning, Kommissarin Franziska Sedlacek and Inspektor Skocik wake Kurt Ostbahn, who has a bad hangover. Sedlacek, who is close to retirement, is more sympathetic toward him than her overzealous young colleague, who is determined to believe that Kurt Ostbahn is the culprit. Kurt sets out to uncover the truth behind the sensational crime on his own, with the help of his musician friend “Trainer,” who is interested in crime-solving. At the “Espresso Rallye,” he first encounters the attractive and mysterious Marlene Thompson, who introduces herself as a hotelier’s wife and even accompanies him to his apartment. Further inquiries lead into an obscure sadomasochistic fetish scene, whose American logo bears a striking resemblance to a tattoo on Marlene Thompson’s thigh. At first, they think they have a lead when they find numerous bootleg copies of CDs by the metal band “Mom & Dead” among Wickerl’s belongings. The band’s flamboyant singer, Donna, also has an unmistakable connection to the fetish scene in question. The case becomes even more complicated when Mr. Josef finds Rudi, murdered in similarly savage fashion. In the end, Kurt Ostbahn himself is in mortal danger. At a “Mom & Dead” concert, an unknown assailant knocks him unconscious and abducts him, but he manages to free himself and catch the murderer—who turns out to be a psychopathic killer and a spurned admirer of Donna. At the end, Kurt Ostbahn is sitting on a train to Paris to visit Marlene Thompson.
