Full plot (contains spoilers)
On their way to Vienna, where their new revue is due to make its debut, composer Heinz Kersten and his orchestrator, Paul Liebling, meet Gerti and Margit. Heinz falls in love with one of them, and Paul with the other. Since Gerti still lives with her uncle, veterinarian Dr. Teisinger, Heinz asks his friend Paul to take a job as Teisinger’s factotum so he can keep Gerti under control for him. While Heinz is busy composing a few final songs for the revue, Paul periodically sends him word that everything is going well with Gerti. But this seems to change abruptly when Gerti gives in to her fiancé Richard Fröhlich’s urging that they marry soon. Paul manages to prevent the wedding, however, by smuggling a small bottle of ether into the bridal bouquet, causing Gerti to fall into a deep sleep at the registry office just before she can say “I do.” When Heinz falls behind on his composing, Paul uses some of the veterinarian’s powder to make several singers hoarse, so the revue’s premiere has to be postponed. He also takes advantage of this to put his beloved Margit in the place of the much-admired revue star Flora Fleuron. The two young women look so alike that they could easily be mistaken for each other. At the first performance, Margit and the now-recovered dancer Flora Fleuron get into an argument backstage. In the end, the rivals agree to dance together. The audience responds to this unexpected turn with thunderous applause. In the end, three couples come together: Heinz and Gerti, Paul and Margit, and Gerti’s former fiancé Richard Fröhlich and Else, Gerti’s best friend.
