The story
Otto Wilhelm Hirsekorn has his hands full: he and his wife have two children, and his brother-in-law Luitbert lives with them. Luitbert struggles at Blume & Co, where Otto Wilhelm’s wife repeatedly persuades him to give her brother another chance. The company is run by Armin Blume, who secretly takes his secretary Corinna to Venice on a business trip. The Hirsekorns also head there after Luitbert wins a holiday for four as the 100,000th visitor to a camping exhibition. Susi travels to Venice to get away from her father’s plan to match her with a man she has never met. The Hirsekorns’ holiday begins amid crowds, with their promised motorboat delayed.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Otto Wilhelm Hirsekorn has a hard time of it: he and his wife had two children later in life, and he also shares his house with his borderline intellectually disabled brother-in-law, Luitbert Gimpl, who is even incapable of rolling up hoses at his garden-hose business, Blume & Co. Nevertheless, Otto Wilhelm’s wife, Sieglinde, repeatedly persuades her husband to give her brother Luitbert another chance at the company, which is run by Armin Blume. The womanizer Blume is under his wife’s thumb, but has still managed to fill the vacant secretary position with the attractive blonde Corinna Schmoll. He secretly arranges a business trip to Venice and takes Corinna with him. The Hirsekorn family is also headed to Venice. Otto Wilhelm’s high-strung sister, Almut, is in the city for a camping exhibition where she is exhibiting. The family visits the exhibition, and the usually unlucky Luitbert wins a holiday trip for four to Venice as the 100,000th visitor. Shortly afterward, he and the Hirsekorn couple, along with their two children, travel to the Italian lagoon city. Aunt Almut stays behind. The two young women Margot and Susi also find their way to Venice. For Susi, the trip is also a distraction: her father would like to set her up with Martin, a medical lecturer she has never met. The Hirsekorn family’s holiday in Venice gets off to a disappointing start: the city is overcrowded, the beach and sea are barely in sight, and the promised motorboat will not be available until the next day. So the family has no choice but to spend the night at a campsite. They do not know that their boat is currently being used by the drug smugglers Luigi and Paco, who hide the drugs in a life ring and plan to retrieve it from the boat the next day. By then, the Hirsekorns and Luitbert have already been given the boat and gone out to sea. Luitbert discovers the drugs and gets high, which ultimately leads, among other things, to his arrest. At their hotel, Susi and Margot meet Dr. Martin Klamm and his friend Rolf. Susi and Margot each pretend to be the other, and Martin does not realize that he is flirting with Susi, whom he has come to hate based on his father’s stories about her. In the end, Martin and Susi, and Rolf and Margot, become couples. Armin Blume’s wife follows him to Venice, and he manages to prevent a marital argument only by chance. He claims that Luitbert, who had wanted to apply for a job at the hotel, and Corinna are a couple; the two are now forced to pretend to be newly engaged. All of this leads to confusion and mistaken identities. When the Hirsekorns’ family dog eventually eats the rest of their holiday money, the family returns home early. Aunt Almut is just then in the process of rearranging the family home to suit her tastes. She intends to live with the Hirsekorns from now on. Otto Wilhelm immediately sets off for Italy again with his family, fleeing once more.
