The story

After several years working in Germany, Galdino returns to Spain with a problem: in letters home, he has falsely claimed to be married. Told that his mother is dying, he heads for his village, stopping first in Madrid. There he meets Iris, a woman who works in a cabaret, and asks her to spend fifteen days in the village pretending to be his wife. Iris initially refuses, but her boyfriend Alfonso persuades her that the money could help them marry. The pair set out for the village, where Galdino’s family expects to meet the wife he has described.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Galdino (Alfredo Landa) returns to Spain after working in Germany for several years, but he has a problem: all this time, he has been lying to his family in letters, telling them he was married. Now he has to return to his village because he has been told that his mother (Lola Gaos) is dying. Before going to his village, he stops in Madrid and meets a woman named Iris (Concha Velasco), who works in a cabaret. He proposes that she spend fifteen days in his village, pretending to be his wife. Although she initially refuses, her boyfriend Alfonso (José Luis López Vázquez) convinces her, arguing that they will be able to get married with the money. When they arrive in the village, they discover that his mother’s illness is a lie, and she insists that they stay and live in the village. Meanwhile, back in Madrid, Iris’s boyfriend has spent all the money. The film was shot mostly in a Madrid-area village called Pedrezuela, although the opening is set in the city of Madrid.
