Full plot (contains spoilers)

Helene, a kind-hearted young woman, lives with her stepmother Gertrud after her father’s death. Gertrud torments her by demanding the impossible. Only with the help of the good fairy Cleo can Helene fulfill her wishes. When Gertrud finally wishes for a castle to impress the young Prince Lassmann, who is looking for a bride, Cleo adds a surprise: Gertrud cannot leave the castle. Cleo locks her in the cellar. Meanwhile, Lassmann, who has lost his way while hunting, comes upon the castle, which he does not know, and immediately falls in love with Helene. They spend the day together. Back home, Lassmann learns from his father that he has been promised since birth to Princess Josefine of the neighboring kingdom. Disappointed, he rides to Helene’s castle, but does not find her there, as she is searching for him at the same time. Gertrud, whom Helene has just freed from the cellar, tells him that Helene was killed by robbers. Helene now believes that Lassmann lied to her, and takes shelter with Hans, a shepherd who lives alone. Thanks to her skill, they are able to sell good products at the market and become prosperous. The following spring, when Josefine sees at the market the beautiful clothes Helene has made over the winter for her wedding to Lassmann, she buys them for her bridesmaids and eventually insists that Helene serve as a bridesmaid herself. At the wedding ceremony, Lassmann recognizes Helene. Josefine, who knows Lassmann’s side of the story and has grown fond of Helene, gives up the marriage, and Helene becomes a princess.
