The story
Princess Ella and court musician Jasper love each other and hope to marry, but her father, King Wilbur, objects because of Jasper’s social rank. Though he pretends he will speak with Jasper, the king has him imprisoned and deceives Ella with a forged letter suggesting Jasper wants to travel. In the dungeon, Jasper meets Flora and Lukas, and persuades Lukas to use his strength to break them out. The three set off together, later joined by the speedy Markus, the mysterious Lisa, and Benjamin, a celebrated marksman. Jasper resolves to confront Wilbur and proposes a high-stakes contest that could determine whether he may marry Ella.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Princess Ella and the court musician Jasper love each other and want to marry. When the princess tells her father, King Wilbur, who is fond of betting and games, he initially refuses the match on grounds of social rank, but then agrees to speak with Jasper. However, he promptly has Jasper thrown into the dungeon and gives his daughter a forged letter claiming that Jasper supposedly wants to explore the world first. In the dungeon, Jasper meets two other prisoners: the red-haired Flora and the strong Lukas, who has never thought of using his strength to escape. Jasper has to convince him with a trick to tear out the bars and flee with him and Flora—and they succeed. After their escape, the three travel the world together. They meet the fast runner Markus and the mysterious Lisa, whom King Wilbur has also banished from his kingdom. Jasper thinks it is only right to teach the king a lesson for his actions. When Benjamin, “the greatest marksman in the whole world,” joins them as well, the six decide to use their abilities to “turn the world upside down” and make a bet with the king. They go to the royal castle, where Jasper challenges the king’s runner to a race. He has disguised himself beforehand so the king will not recognize him. He stakes his life if he loses; if he wins, the king must grant him the princess’s hand in marriage. Confident of victory, the king agrees. Princess Ella is outraged, because she does not recognize Jasper in his disguise and, even though Jasper has disappeared so suddenly, still wants to marry no one but him. The race begins, and Markus is so fast that he gains a huge lead over the king’s runner. This tempts him to take a short break. He lies down under a tree and promptly falls asleep. Jasper grows worried, and when Benjamin looks into the distance, he sees Markus asleep beneath the tree. Without hesitation, he shoots a branch out of the crown of the tree, waking Markus so that he can still win the race. Flora helps him by making a vine grow across the path—she can communicate with plants—and it trips the king’s runner. After losing the race, the king pretends to agree to hold the wedding the following day. But that night, he orders his chancellor to kill the stranger. The chancellor fails, however, because Jasper is warned by the princess. Jasper then reveals his identity, and Ella realizes what a deceitful game her father is playing. To teach her father a lesson, the princess agrees to the wedding. The king is surprised by his daughter’s sudden change of heart and lays on a feast for Jasper and his friends. Unnoticed by them, he locks all six friends in the room and has a fire lit beneath it. When the floor has already begun to glow, the mysterious Lisa reveals her abilities. With a few breaths, she spreads a freezing cold that makes everything freeze. Completely frozen, the six leave the room when the king has it opened again. Jasper reveals his identity, whereupon the king offers him as much gold as one man can carry if he will give up the wedding, since he wants to keep his daughter at any cost. Jasper pretends to accept, and shows the king that the strong Lukas can carry so much that the king’s treasury is practically emptied. At last, the king sincerely agrees to the wedding. However, Jasper and his friends have decided to travel out into the wide world first, and Ella goes with them. In the end, King Wilbur is left not only alone but also without his treasure, which Lukas has sunk in the lake until their return.
