A womanizing landowner’s conduct feeds the frustration of his paraplegic teenage son, who secretly watches him from his bedroom window.
The story
In Viareggio, Giorgio, a middle-aged landowner known for womanizing, seduces young women while maintaining his marriage to Alessia. Despite his repeated infidelities, their life together is generally stable; their main worry is their only child, Andrea, a paraplegic teenager who cannot move freely. Andrea feels unable to satisfy his own sexual desires and lives in a state of repression. His father’s behavior fuels those feelings, and Andrea secretly watches him through the window of his room. The contrast between Giorgio’s conduct and Andrea’s sense of helplessness forms the story’s initial tension.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Viareggio. Giorgio, a middle-aged landowner with a reputation as a womanizer, relies on his charm to seduce any young woman who takes his fancy so that he can satisfy his sexual desires, while never failing to perform his marital duties with his beautiful wife, Alessia. Despite Giorgio’s repeated infidelities, the couple’s life together goes well, and the only blemish on it is the health of their only child, Andrea, who is a teenager. Andrea is paraplegic and unable to move freely; he lives in a state of repression because he feels powerless to give himself sexual gratification, as his father does. Andrea’s desire is fueled by his father’s behavior, which he secretly watches through the window of his room. The situation changes, however, when Giorgio dies after falling down the stairs. Although Alessia resigns herself to her new status as a widow, she cannot avoid finding a replacement for her late husband. To that end, she hires Massimo as a sharecropper, a middle-aged, handsome man who often comes into contact with Alessia. Her beauty does not leave him indifferent: he courts her and tries to enter her romantic and sexual life. For Andrea, this becomes a further incentive to fuel the sexual desire that had subsided after his father’s death. Moreover, although Alessia is his mother, Andrea has been unable—first with his father, and now with Massimo—not to look at her with desire. Realizing that her son’s needs are repressed, Alessia recognizes his problems and resolves the situation by satisfying him naturally, without the boy realizing it.
